About Earache

An earache assessment is a quick and gentle way to understand the cause of ear pain or discomfort. Our trained professionals examine your ears safely and carefully, offering clear guidance and the right next steps to help you feel better.

Experiencing ear pain or discomfort and unsure what’s causing it?
At Coleshill Pharmacy & Travel Clinic, our Earache Assessment service offers a quick, safe, and convenient way to understand your symptoms and receive guidance on appropriate next steps.

What is an Earache Assessment?

An earache assessment helps identify possible causes of ear pain or discomfort. At Coleshill Pharmacy & Travel Clinic, our trained team will carry out a careful examination of the outer ear and gather information about your symptoms. While we do not diagnose medical conditions, we can advise whether your symptoms may be related to issues such as wax build-up, irritation, minor infections, or other common concerns.

If needed, we will also direct you to the most appropriate healthcare professional for further care.

Why Earache Assessments Matter

Earaches can be caused by a variety of factors. Understanding the source of discomfort early can help prevent symptoms from worsening. An earache assessment can help identify issues such as:

  • Wax build-up
  • Ear canal irritation
  • Possible infections
  • Eustachian tube problems
  • Pressure or congestion-related discomfort

Our service provides clear guidance so you can take the right steps to feel better.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

Your earache appointment will take around 10–15 minutes and includes:

  • A brief discussion about your symptoms and recent health
  • A visual examination of the ear using an otoscope
  • An explanation of what we can safely see and assess
  • Advice on over-the-counter treatments, self-care, or next steps
  • Referral guidance if your symptoms require GP or specialist attention

If wax build-up is suspected, we may recommend microsuction or arrange a follow-up appointment.

How to Prepare for Your Appointment

To help us assess your ears effectively, please:

  • Avoid inserting cotton buds or objects into your ears
  • Refrain from using ear drops on the day of your appointment unless advised
  • Make a note of when your symptoms started
  • Let us know if you have had recent colds, allergies, or sinus issues

These details help us understand your symptoms more clearly.

Please inform Coleshill Pharmacy & Travel Clinic if any of the following apply:

  • You have discharge or fluid coming from the ear
  • You have severe, sudden, or worsening pain
  • You have sudden hearing loss
  • You have had recent ear surgery
