Fast, Confidential Support When You Need It
Emergency contraception helps prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or if your regular contraception has failed (for example, a missed pill or condom break). At Coleshill Pharmacy, we provide discreet, professional advice and access to emergency contraception when time matters most.
The sooner emergency contraception is taken, the more effective it is.
What Is Emergency Contraception?
Emergency contraception is a safe and effective method used to reduce the risk of pregnancy after unprotected intercourse. It works by delaying or preventing ovulation and does not interrupt an existing pregnancy.
Emergency contraception is not intended for regular use but can be used in urgent situations.
When You May Need Emergency Contraception
You may consider emergency contraception if:
- You had sex without using contraception
- A condom broke or slipped
- You missed one or more contraceptive pills
- Your regular contraception failed
- You were sick or had diarrhoea while taking the pill
If you are unsure, our pharmacy team can help assess whether emergency contraception is suitable for you.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
Your consultation is private and usually takes around 5–10 minutes. It includes:
- A confidential discussion about what happened
- Assessment of suitability for emergency contraception
- Advice on correct use and effectiveness
- Information on ongoing contraception options
- Referral if another method (such as a coil) is more appropriate
No appointment is usually required—walk-ins are welcome.
Important Information
- Emergency contraception works best when taken as soon as possible
- It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
- Your next period may be earlier or later than usual
- If your period is more than 7 days late, a pregnancy test is advised
